A kantha quilt is one of the simplest things in Indian textiles and one of the hardest to fake. Two or more layers of cotton are laid together and joined by a running stitch worked by hand, line after line, across the whole surface. Nothing is glued, bonded or quilted by machine. The stitch is the structure.
Where kantha comes from
The technique is a thrift tradition from eastern India — Bengal and what is now Bangladesh — where worn saris and dhotis were stacked and stitched into light coverlets rather than thrown away. The name refers to the stitching itself, not to a pattern. Today the same running stitch is worked on hand block printed cotton as a finished product in its own right, which is what most of our kantha quilts are.
How to tell hand kantha from machine quilting
- Stitch rhythm. Hand-worked running stitch is slightly uneven — lengths and spacing vary a little from one stitch to the next. Machine quilting is metronomic.
- Line drift. Rows of hand kantha wander gently. Perfectly parallel, perfectly straight lines usually mean a machine.
- The reverse. Turn it over. Hand stitching reads as dashes on both faces; machine lock-stitch shows a continuous thread on the underside.
- Thread ends. Hand-stitched pieces have small knots and joins where a length of thread ran out.
Slight irregularity is the mark of the real thing, not a defect.

Choosing a size
Buy for the bed plus the drop you want on each side, not for the mattress alone. Indian mattress widths run roughly 36 in single, 48 in double, 60 in queen and 72 in king; a quilt that is going to hang over both sides needs to be meaningfully wider than that. A kantha quilt does not have to live on a bed. They work as a summer coverlet, a sofa throw, a picnic layer, or folded at the foot of a bed for weight and colour.
